Three Legged Horse

I worked on a horse that only has three useable legs and must be sedated and worked on up-side down! The horse owner was pleased because of the speed of the tool meant less time trimming and less trauma to the horse. Dr. Siler, our local vet, was very impressed with the tool and plans to order one for use in his practice! I've since used it on half a dozen normal standing horses with great results.

The cutter arrived last week and I love it. It makes the job of trimming feet so much easier and does a great job. Cleaning the sole is a breeze. The horses didn't take long to adjust to the sound of the tool. I had to buy an adapter to fit the plug on the cord for our system.
I'll be spreading the word to some others who do their own horses and you might end up with some more sales from here. The exchange rate makes it worthwhile ordering from the U.S. Ordering and mailing was prompt.
I'll order some replacement discs and chain soon.
It was a pleasure doing business with you.

International Hoof-Care Summit

I was introduced to the Merlin this past February 2010 at the International Hoof-care Summit. A DVD was playing showing a horse’s hoof being trimmed with the Merlin. I was intrigued that the tool only required one hand to operate, was lightweight, and the blade removed hoof wall in a controlled precise manner. After talking to the national sales manager (Allen De Wolf), I owned my own Merlin five minutes later. It usually takes more time before I pull out my wallet!
The Merlin is a valuable alternative to using nippers, the traditional method of hoof removal. It takes a lot of strength to squeeze the nipper handles together, especially when the hooves get dry and hard in the summer. This electric knife peels rock hard hoof off in layers with ease, including sole and bar clean up as well. After using nippers for 35 years, my arms and hands welcomed the relief I received going electric! So for the Farrier who wants to extend their career, as well as the horse owner caring for their own horses (with proper education) it makes the job far less physical. There are only four blades to sharpen, and using the Merlin sharpening rod it only takes a minute to resharpen.
I am impressed how well the Merlin works with my product the Hoofjack®. Using these tools together is a winning combination. The Hoofjack® supports the hoof while you trim, instead of your back and knees. It also keeps the cutting blades away from your legs, a big safety feature. Horses are anatomically more comfortable, and therefore more compliant than when held manually. Using these two tools together relieves much of the body strain associated with hoof trimming.

ONE GREAT TRIMMER
2010-06-29 @ 12:07:00
I have 5 miniature donkeys, 3 mules and 12 horses. I do all my own hoof trimming. This is a real chore that has to be done on a regular basis. I used to do it with hoof nippers and a hoof knife. Then I saw an ad in the Western Horseman magazine and I was really impressed with what they had to say about the electric hoof trimmer and what it could do. I ordered one from Rominic Livestock Services in Alberta. After using this electric hoof trimmer on all my own horses for the first time I found that it is so easy to trim a foot nice and straight when you are looking straight down. It did not take any time at all to desensitize any of the animals. Some of these mules and horses had never had their feet trimmed before. After trimming 12 horses in one day I decided to become the dealer for Manitoba, Canada. The support I received from King Arthur Tools has been great. They are fantastic to deal with. Trimming With Merlin

Got the Merlin up and going - trimmed 2 Sunday - MERLIN worked just great. First one I used MERLIN on was a 3 year old Gelding (Satchmo Armstrong) who is bomb proof and he was SUPER excellent - it took a total of 7 MINUTES TO DO 4 FEET and that was the first time I ever used MERLIN - and that was a complete trim - picked - trim frog (knife) - sole, bars and wall (MERLIN) - finish (hand rasp) and I most of all I didn't work hard at all. I also did his 1/2 Sister (Choreography) who is definitely "different" any way - for the first side she was just fine - but for the other side she was pretty jumpy because the chips were hitting her in the belly - on the first side the chips flew away from her - I know she will eventually overcome this - the noise and vibration does not seem to bother either one of them - all of my horses stand for clipping or bridle path trim with electric clippers so this is a big plus. Still managed to get her done in 15 minutes - next time most likely in less time as she is always a little skittish - but definitely not stupid LIKES: Easy to hold Light weight Extremely FAST NO Fatigue Easy to do corrective trims DISLIKES Position of on / off switch should be a pressure on / off switch located at front of grinder so that you press it with your thumb as you need it - will take some time getting used to it Comments: First time horses - start them on the near side or start with their back feet first - so the chips fly away from the horse initially. Tomorrow I will do one of my brood Mares who is very quiet - but when she was young she was a hand full for the first few trims - be interesting to see how she behaves. Would definitely recommend MERLIN to any one who wants to save time, energy and end up with a professional hoof trim.

“I can trim with less stress and fatigue on my wrist" Glenn Rowland - Southland Cattle Services
“I guess the right word for it is smoother, it’s got less chance of it grabbing, chipping, other wheels I haven’t used very much, so I’m not familiar, I’m not familiar with this but I’m learning, it’s the first time I’ve ever seen it, I think it’s smooth, it’s easier to handle. And it will cut.” Jerry Bowman - Bowman Hoof Care
“Easy to change the blade”
“Convenient to sharpen the blade”
